The use of animal skin and fur has progressed from basic clothing and shelter to sophisticated fashionable wears as well as decorations for walls, floors, doors, ceilings, and various home and office furniture. These decorations have prominent artistic and aesthetic values. Some people are familiar with the terms “mat” and “carpet”, but not “rug”. A rug is simply a decorative covering of thick material, typically not extending over the entire surface on which it is placed. When such materials consist of hide, they are called hide rugs.
Hide is animal skin that has been treated for humans to use basically for clothing and decoration. Hides may consist of leather or furs from various animals. Hide rugs are generally named following the animal from which the hide was made. Examples include cowhide rugs, sheepskin rugs, reindeer rugs, etc…
Hide rugs are also named based on finishing touches during production. For example, metallic hide rugs have a metallic finish and usually look brighter and more attractive. They are stunning and luxurious and look modern relative to their natural counterparts. Patchwork hide rugs make another outstanding set of examples which are made by sewing several patches of the animal skin together resulting in an array of stylish and unique designs.
Hide rugs make floors and walls attractive and beautiful and generally give the entire space a unique touch. They are a must for every modern home setting. When choosing a hide rug, there are several factors that the buyer has to take into consideration. The very first consideration is health. It is always smart to choose hypo-allergenic rugs. This way, no one in the home has to worry about their allergies. You tend to find because of the process used in cleaning the hides that animalskins usually are Hypo-Allergenic. It is always good practice to ask other people who have animal skins in their home to see if they suffer any problems. Especially if you do suffer from allergies.
The second factor is cost. Go for a particular hide type, shape or size that fits your budget. If you are on a tight budget, stay away from those that have extra metallic coatings or patchwork.
Thirdly, you need to consider the position where the hide rug will be placed. Will it be a high traffic area like in the living room or low traffic area like in a dog’s bed or just hung on the wall or placed on furniture?
Cowhide rugs are usually the best when all these three considerations are made. However, there are other alternatives to cowhide rugs which you may want to consider. Sheepskin rugs are generally softer and warmer than cowhide rugs and usually work best on furniture like couches and pet beds. People who just want their homes to have a look and feel that is different from the conventional go for reindeer hide rugs. These can be put on spectacular positions on the floor or just hung on the walls to give the entire room a unique country look.
Just getting a hide rug and using as decoration isn’t enough. You have to learn some basic maintenance skills to make them last long. At times, just dusting and shaking vigorously is enough but in some situations more thorough cleaning may be necessary. This will require a damp cloth and mild soap, and wiping with the grain of the hair, not against it! At times, mild shampoo and sponge will do the job. As the sponge itself gets dirty during the cleaning process, don’t forget to repeatedly rinse it with warm water. Hide rugs normally should not be allowed to get very wet but if this happens, consider removing excessive moisture from the room using a dehumifier.
